Social Media: Nothing New To See Here
August 26, 2009 on 2:37 pm | In #smcharlotte, #sofresh, Social Media, Web 2.0, Public Relations, PR |Social Fresh, a conference on this thing we call social media, was held in Charlotte August 24. The presentations were top-notch and the networking opportunities were excellent, but at the end of the day I can report there is nothing new about social media.
If you are in PR and have been practicing it correctly, you can handle social media. PR is about dialogue. So is social media.
If you are in marketing and have followed best practices, you can handle social media. Marketing is about crafting a relevant message and delivering it to the right person at the right time. So is social media.
The big questions about social media are the ones we have wrestled with in marketing for years: how do we integrate social media into the fabric of the organization, and how do we show hard-nosed business executives that social media does have an impact upon the bottom line.
Is social media new and different, or is it the same-old, same-old? We’ll be talking more about this in the days ahead, and would love to have your thoughts on the topic.

H2 u rock! I knew there was a reason I liked you:) Agreed, agreed, and most importantly, agreed. With all the hubaloo abt the conf and back patting I’ve been hesistant to voice my thoughts; which echo yours (particularily as I’ve now decided I want to traverse the US getting paid to share my views on SM, come with- What’s better than getting paid to share commonly know bits and bites)(funny thing, I’m serious abt this, may need 2 hire MCT to assist:).
Marketing has become trendy- every where I look there’s a marketeer, maven and guru (in their own minds atleast)
Early last year I’ve gotten ‘back in the box’. The most glaringly obvious fact I’ve been noticing for some time now is

Oops, posting from phone. - is that the foundation is the most important part of every structure. Before u can every get to the place where you get additonal training/certificates that enable u 2 title urself a pro, you must hv a grasp of the basics. If u don’t have a foundation then SM is not gonna save u. And like u said, if you do then SM becomes another tool for your arsenal used much in the same way we use evrything else that works for us. The one SM has done is make everybody feel much better abt themselves than warranted. In the land of DIY every1 is doing just that. Its crowded, silly, hostile and all around unproductive- that’s why I’m back in the box, sticking to the basics, the tried and true.
The one thing I did take away was the need to do something similar for memebers of ethic groups; we were absolutely absent from that conf. I will follow with u more abt that later, Id like to hear ur thoughts.
