USA Today has a feature on the 25 most memorable TV ads of all times. Most memorable does not mean most effective.

For instance, consider the dog sock puppet from Pets.com, the now defunct online pet store. During the dotcom era, Pets.com spent a load of money trying to build a brand. Guess what? You don’t build brands with ads, you build them with consumer experiences. Pets.com went the way of the T. Rex because there was no there, there.
