DO:

  • Take the news media seriously.
  • Get to know the media in your area and industry, preferably on a first-name basis.
  • Understand (and respect) deadlines for various media.
  • Explain your business in terms of what it means to average customers. . .in plain English.
  • Make yourself available as a source.
  • Return media calls promptly.
  • Call reporters with story ideas, even though they may not involve you or your clients directly.

DON’T:

  • Expect to be in the news constantly.
  • Assume that advertising entitles you to media coverage.
