Idiots With Dimes

The old joke about pay phones (you do remember pay phones, don’t you?) was that any idiot with a dime could make a bell ring inside your home. The technology has changed but the idiots still have money.

At least in the old days it was a real person at the other end of the line. Just today my home phone rings (yes, I still have a landline for Internet connection purposes) and from the other end I hear a digital voice that says, “this call is for Harry Hoover. If you are Harry Hoover, push 1 now.” Not just “no” but “Hell, no.” I hung up. It’s bad enough that digital dumbass marketers are calling me, but now they are ordering me around.

In retrospect I should have pushed 1 to find out who this dumbass was. Then, I could have told all my blog readers and we could have mounted a boycott. OK, here is what I’m suggesting:

If you are tired of these so-called marketers bothering you, let’s rise up. Sign up to receive comments on this posting. Anytime you have something like this happen, come here and add your comment to this post. We want details. We want names. We want to spread this through viral marketing practices like StumbleUpon. Let’s embarrass some companies enough that they stop these egregious practices and get back to marketing the right way.

Thanks, I feel better now that I got that off my chest.

Thought I saw steam rising in the east, must’ve been from your ears. I haven’t had the problem. My wife and I went off Ma Bell’s grid about a year ago, and we have cable piped in for our Internet service…but if I hear of stories, I’ll pass them along.

LOL. I have one computer calling my cell phone daily (no idea who but probably a mortgage company) and another about 4x’s per week that leaves a computer generated message (credit card company) and that was a number that used to be on the national do not call registry (though I think that died a while ago). One of the things I like to do with these computer calls is simply pick up the phone and say nothing. After a while it will usually kick to a real person who doesn’t have the patience to play my game with me. LOL. They usually stop after that.
