Google News – From Aggregator To ?

Steve Rubel at Micropersuasion comments on Google’s decision to allow subjects of news stories to email their comments. Their comments will be an addendum to the story.

Rubel says: This is certainly a boon for PR professionals who have longed for a way to respond to what is largely an automated system. Wikipedia needs a similar mechanism. Google is also fairly liberal in the sources it aggregates. It includes lots of homegrown sites and blogs. This approach, while managed manually, certainly gives companies and subjects a voice on a critical site that is increasingly a big gateway for lots of news/blog content.

This decision does raise a number of questions. Chief in my mind is: what has Google News become? Originally it was just an aggregator of news from other sources. This moves the digital behemoth into a new arena. What do you think?

In theory, Google is trying to provide unbiased news content, allowing story subjects to comment. In reality, much like complaint.tv, there is much room for people to corrupt the system with their messages and agendas. Google will find itself spending a lot of resources on policing this sort of system, but it’s a great experiment.

I guess it comes down to what the masses want. Right now, it appears that they want folks to tell them what to think rather than having to wade through all the hard stuff. We’ll see.
