We like to pop into the world of QR Codes once and a while to see what’s happening. Many folks think the QR Code will go the route of the dinosaur. Others believe it is the end-all, be-all. I’ll let you decide. Below are a few recent articles we have found on QR Codes.

QR Is All Grown Up - After being in this space for a while, people are constantly trying to debate that QR is dead. I think a maturation perspective is a much better fit.

QR Codes: A Safer Bet Than SMS - Gambling company Ladbrokes has seen QR codes outperform SMS in a recent customer acquisition campaign, delivering over twice as many responses and a third more acquisitions.

4 Ways Restaurants Should Use QR Codes- Despite criticism, the QR code continues to be a major player in the evolution of mobile commerce. But while many Fortune 500 advertisers may have embraced the QR code in their marketing efforts, the restaurant industry has proven a relatively late adopter of the technology.

Examples Of QR Codes In Advertising - Tappinn has released the largest collection of QR code placement examples on the web! Scroll through a ‘Look Book’ with 100′s of images to spark ideas for effective QR code implementation. Getting shoppers from ‘print to palm’ is the objective of every advertiser.

Macy’s Smart Social Media Strategy - One of the biggest interactive programs Macy’s has launched in the last few years is its “Backstage Pass” program. The in-store feature enables users to snap QR codes in different departments to get expert advice from some of the brand’s celebrity partners.

10 Funniest QR Code Fails - Two designers set out to find the craziest usage of QR (Quick Response) codes and poke fun at them. The result is a new Tumblr called WTF QR Codes

Are QR codes worthwhile? There are a lot of naysayers out there trashing their use. If you are reading a newspaper and a QR code pops up, are you really going to take the time to scan the code to see where it takes you? Well, the data would suggest a lot of consumers are doing just that. A new study indicates that 14 million US adults scanned a code in June 2011. According to Mashable,

Those people, representing 6.2% of the total mobile audience in the U.S., scanned a QR or bar code on their mobile device, comScore estimates. The report also showed that QR code users are more likely to be male (60.5%), between the ages of 18 to 34 (53.4%) and have a household income in excess of $100,000 (36.1%)

As more consumers get smartphones this trend will continue. And, I contend that if marketers begin to use QR codes creatively and to their full potential, then this wonderful addition to the marketing arsenal will blossom.

What are some more creative uses? Well, retailers could use them to:

cross-sell coordinated outfits and accessories

drive shoppers to in-store only specials

direct shoppers to head-to-head product comparisons

enable Facebook Places check-ins for special on-the-spot deals

set up PayPal Buy Now links

A South Korean company set up a virtual grocery store in a subway station. Photos of QR coded products on a shelf can be scanned to add them to your shopping cart. You checkout and then have items delivered to your home by the end of the day.

I could see real estate companies using them to provide directions to listed homes. Scan the code, launch your iphone map and follow it to your destination. A QR code on a For Sale sign could replace the paper flyers that blow all over the neighborhood.

Tourism seems to offer the most possibility. Think about a hiker in a state park. He sees a QR code, scans it and it directs him to a site where there are trail maps, photos of park attractions, and videos discussing the flora and fauna. Museums can use them to provide access to deeper information about an exhibit. Develop v-calendar entries for upcoming events. Scan the code and bam! the date is in your calendar.

What other creative uses can you think of for QR codes?

QR codes, we believe, have a place in marketing. However, they are not just for directing traffic back to your website. The future of QR codes is in making the user’s life easier. We plan to explore this in a future post.

But for now, here are some stories about how marketers are using QR codes. Drop us a note if you have QR code information that THINKing readers would appreciate.

QR Codes Aim to Curb Drunken Driving in Texas – In 2009, Texas saw 1,235 deaths – more than any other state that year – from crashes involving drivers with blood alcohol concentrations of 0.08 percent or higher. So, state officials developed a QR code promotion to help curb drunken driving.

5 Tips For QR Code Campaigns – It’s a lot to ask of consumers for them to participate in your marketing campaign. So, make it easy for them.

3 QR Code Uses For Brands - QR Codes can help grow your brand. Here’s how.

Death To The QR Code – Some people don’t see a future for QR codes.

Do QR Codes Work? - QR Codes – when used correctly – can work to your advantage. However, they are not the end-all-be-all and there must be a strategy in place when utilizing them.
