Personal brands have been on my mind a lot recently, as you can tell by my posting last week. A couple of episodes of late have me thinking about how people evaluate your brand and how many strikes you are allowed before they chalk up an out in your personal box score.

I’m working on a presentation about personal branding for delivery at My Creative Team University. As I was doing the research, it became clear that in today’s working world you must take control of your own brand. If you don’t position yourself, someone else will position you. That’s not always a good thing.

In our increasingly interconnected, digital world, your personal brand becomes more important because it is hanging out there naked for anyone to see via Google and all the other search engines, as well as social media sites. A brand rests on truth, not on a thin veneer of calculated actions. So, like any good brand, you must nurture and maintain your reputation.

If you aren’t learning something new, you’re wasting space and hurting your brand. Digital technology makes it easy to pick up some new skills or knowledge. In today’s working world, each of us must build and maintain our own brand. It’s not much different than branding a product or service. The best brands always try to do the right thing, so that their reputations will remain unsullied. But beyond that they grow, evolve and get better with time, while maintaining their special qualities from the past.
